Ubumbano Rail, Alstom, and New Africa Rail established Gibela as a South African and French manufacturer of railroad rolling stock. Currently, Alstom owns 61% of the black-owned company, with Ubumbano Rail holding 30% and New Africa Rail 9%.

Gibela’s scholarship program for the 2023–2024 school year is now accepting applications. Scholarships are available to attend the following colleges and institutions, as well as institutes of technology and vocational and technical education (TVET):

- Information Technology
- Mechanical Engineering
- Supply Chain
- Metallurgical Engineering
Students in TVET will receive full coverage for these expenses:
- Tuition Fees
- Book Allowance
Students in the University and University of Technology will receive full coverage for these expenses:
- Book Allowance
- Tuition Fees
- Accommodation
- Meals
Please note that the bursaries given are for a year and can be renewed with good academic performance.
Criteria for Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following minimal entrance criteria before applying. Please keep in mind that failure to meet all requirements will result in your application being rejected:
Students of TVET
- You must be a South African citizen.
- You must be in Matric or have finished it by 2022.
- In Matric, you must have at least a level 4 in Mathematics, Science, and English.
- You must be studying, or planning to study, in one of the aforementioned streams in 2023.
- You must be studying or planning to study in a South African Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution.
- You must have a strong academic record and the potential for academic honors.
- You must require assistance.
- Current N3 and N4 students are encouraged to apply.
Students from universities and universities of technology
- You must be a South African citizen.
- You must be in Matric in 2022, or have completed it.
- You must have a minimum Matric result of level 6 in Mathematics, Physical Science, and Accounting.
- You must have a minimum English result level of 5 in Matric.
- You must be studying, or planning to study, in one of the aforementioned streams in 2023.
- You must be studying or planning to study at an authorized South African university or university of technology.
- You must have a strong academic record and the potential for academic honors.
- You must require assistance.
- Students in their first and second years should apply.
