About Orlando Pirates
The Orlando Pirates Football Club, also referred to as “The Buccaneers,” is a professional football team from South Africa that is situated in the Johannesburg suburb of Houghton and competes in the DStv Premiership, the country’s top division of football. The team plays its home games in Soweto’s Orlando Stadium.
The club’s original headquarters were in Orlando, Soweto, where it was established in 1937. The group of youths who had originally formed an amateur football team at Orlando Boys Club broke off and began congregating at the home of one of the persons who worked there, earning them the nickname “amapirate,” which means “Pirates” in IsiZulu.
Having won the domestic league ABSA Premiership, the FA Cup Nedbank Cup, and the Top 8 Cup MTN 8 during the ABSA Premiership 2010-11 season and the domestic league ABSA Premiership, the League Cup Telkom Knockout, and the Top 8 Cup MTN 8 during the ABSA Premiership 2011-12 season, Orlando Pirates are the first club since the Premier Soccer League’s inception in 1996 to have won three major trophies in a single season back to back.
Together with Mamelodi Sundowns, they are one of just two South African teams to have won the CAF Champions League, which they did in 1995. They came in second place in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2015 and 2021–2022.
