REPORTS TO: HEAD OF FINANCE

Reliance Insurance Company (T) Limited is one of the best non-life insurance companies in Tanzania. It has offices in Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Mbeya, and Dodoma.

The company offers many different kinds of insurance that don’t cover life, such as fire, engineering, motor, workers’ compensation, liability, marine hull, and aviation insurance. Reliance had been making steady progress and had made a name for itself in the Tanzania insurance industry as a reliable player with a strong financial base and a reputation for fast, efficient, and effective customer service.

PURPOSE:

The person in this role is in charge of managing the company’s investment portfolio every day in line with the company’s strategic plan and relevant policies and guidelines. Even though the person in this job will report to the Head of Finance, it is expected that he or she won’t need much help.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Investment Activity

Make a statement for our investment policy guide that explains our investment goals and any relevant rules. Build a portfolio of high-performing investments based on how the market is doing and what’s going on in society. Coordinate the buying and selling of securities to meet or reach the company’s investment goals, based on a plan that has been approved by the board. Follow time frames for liquidity needs, expected returns, and market conditions to keep risk levels at a level that is acceptable.

Perform due diligence on new investments as part of this. figuring out or evaluating the terms and structure of the possible investment and putting together investment proposals for the management and board investment committees to look over.

Portfolio Management

Manage and report on the investments in the portfolio on an ongoing basis. This includes making sure that a plan and budget for investments are made every year and that management and the Board Investment Committee look over them. Monitoring and evaluating the actual performance of investments against agreed benchmarks, including monthly and quarterly investment reports as stipulated in the investment policies, and preparing quarterly portfolio reports for the management team and the Investment Committee of the Board of Directors Monitor the company’s liquidity to ensure that claims and spending commitments can be met. Provide advice to management on investment asset allocation to maximise returns at optimal risk. Prepare and monitor the investment risk register, including mitigations. Make suggestions for changes to investment strategies based on observed market trends.

Internal Processes and Regulatory Compliance

Review the investment portfolio’s long-term performance against the goals, ensuring policy compliance, and recommend to the board the appointment of investment consultants and their responsibilities as necessary. Check to see that all laws and rules are being followed, such as the Insurance Act. ensuring that the company complies with all applicable financial and investment regulations

Other Activities

Regularly conduct research to stay up-to-date on Tanzania’s economy, the state of the world’s financial markets, and general current events and how they might affect a company’s portfolio. Take part in writing up the lessons learned from investment operations and the new best practises in your field. Take part in and contribute to sessions where employees, especially those in the finance department, share information and experiences to build team knowledge. Create and maintain strong connections with all parties involved to create investment opportunities.

PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

  • Academic Qualifications
  • A degree in finance or a relevant field from an accredited institution
  • Professional Qualification Preferred
  • Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management Certification

Experience

at least 3 years of experience in the financial industry, preferably in insurance, managing investments.

Skills and Attributes

Working knowledge of the insurance industry Proven exposure to risk management and a good understanding of principles of risk management Excellent report writing, presentation, and communication skills IT proficiency i.e…, experience in analysis using statistical packages, MS Excel, and other analytical tools Understanding Continuous Process Improvement Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills with attention to detail Leadership and People management skills
